Dongguan, situated in the central southern region of Guangdong province and northeast of the Pearl River Delta, borders the provincial capital Guangzhou to the north and Shenzhen to the south.
Covering a total area of 2,465 square kilometers, Dongguan has a humid subtropical climate characterized by abundant sunshine and rainfall throughout the year.
Renowned as "the world's factory", Dongguan hosts more than 10,000 foreign-invested enterprises, making it one of the largest global manufacturing bases. The city comprises a modern industrial system with eight pillar industries including electronic information, electrical machinery, textile and clothing, furniture, toys, paper products, food and beverage, and chemical industries.

Dongguan also serves as a traffic hub and an important port for international trade in Guangdong. The city has gained international fame for hosting several international business events, including the Guangdong 21st Century Maritime Silk Road International Expo, the Taiwan Trade Fair and the World Dongguan Entrepreneurs Convention.
With over 1,700 years of history, Dongguan is an important cradle of Lingnan culture. Cantonese Opera and folk songs sung in local dialect are prevalent in the region. The city is a famous tourist destination for the viewing of relics and ancient architectures such as Humen Fortress, Keyuan Garden, Haogang Prehistory Relics and Nanshe Ancient Village.
As an excellent tourist city in China, Dongguan possesses 26 tourist attractions, including 14 4A-level and 12 3A-level sites.
The city is also a famous ancestral homeland for over 300,000 overseas Chinese, with more than 1.2 million people in Hong Kong and Macao SARs tracing their ancestry to Dongguan.
By 2023, Dongguan's permanent resident population reached 10.49 million, with 9.73 million residing in urban areas, resulting in an urbanization rate of 92.83 percent. The GDP reached 1,140 billion yuan ($159.84 billion), marking a 2.6 percent increase from the previous year.
